The STILT ROCKERS are looking for a new member - we are currently a drummer and guitarist/singer who perform while walking on stilts. Vocal abilities (lead and harmony) are a must, higher vocal range (tenor, alto, soprano) preferred. We also need you to be able to play some other instruments - we aren't picky about what (seriously - bass, sax, kazoo, harmonica, shaker, tambourine, etc.) so long as you will be able to play it while walking on stilts. If you own and can walk on stilts, that's a plus, but if you're serious and willing to learn, we can work with that.
MUST have a good knowledge of classic rock/pop and R&B tunes....ex; the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Blondie, and other mainstream artists. We have corporate clients waiting on this trio to get promo together to book events in the very near future. When we have a few responses, we will set up an audition date, and ask you to learn a few songs from a list (on whatever instrument you choose), and pick one or two songs of your own to show us. Bring any and all instruments and talents that you think will work. During the audition, we will play some songs with you, you will play some for us by yourself, and we will see whether you can play, stilt, and do both together. Serious Players ONLY! Problem - Please help

Having decided to retire from stilting on my 60th birthday, I then sold my stilts.

Now 9 weeks later I am having withdrawl symptoms - I am missing the unpredictable existance of being high and vunerable in unusual and difficult situations, and the awesum feeling when I have successfully conquered one of my challenges.

So what do I do?

Ignore the symptoms and hope I will get over that pirce of my life that is missing?

or

Beg, borrow or buy some more stilts and carry on where I left off.

Suggestions please.................

The Carpetbag Brigade will teach two acrobatic stilt workshops for performers in Oakland, May 16-17 (beginner) andMay 22-24 (advanced). Both workshops will be held in Mosswood Park; the advanced workshop will also be partly at an indoor space in Oakland TBA. We will have several pairs of stilts available for participants' use.

Beginning Stilts for Performers
OAKLAND: Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, 1-7pm
with Anson Smith & Sid Silver

No previous stilt experience necessary. A medium-fast-paced introduction to stilt work geared towards dancers, physical actors and other embodied performers. We will begin with warmups and training intended to bring awareness to the musculature and movement technique stilts require. We will work with proper stilt alignment and gaits, then move each day into choreography, character work and transitions to the ground and back.

We will have several pairs of aluminum stilts available.

$160 early reg.: by May 1
$190 regular registration

(Advanced Stilts for Performers)
OAKLAND: May 22-24, Fri 2-8pm, Sat. & Sun. 10am-6pm
with Jay Ruby, director of The Carpetbag Brigade

In this workshop we dynamically integrate yoga postures, Butoh dance and Contact Improvisation into acrobatic stilt work, with an eye towards presence and performance application. We will work with stilt inversions, investigate oppositions and graceful ground movement. Exercises for falling gracefully, effortlessly and safely to the ground will be taught along with a focus on partner work. A secondary aspect of the workshop is to develop character, choreography and composition.

If you have aluminum or other non-wooden stilts, please bring them (wooden stilts will break in this workshop!) We will have several pairs of aluminum stilts available.

$265 early registration (by May 1)
$315 regular registration

"Call to Artists" Santa Cruz Performance Invasion

Call to Artists

An all day performance event is being planned for May 31st in Santa Cruz starting early noon and continuing until sun down. This event will happen at San Lorenzo Park, an outside public space adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The intention of this event is to explore interventionist performance art and create space for collaboration and improvisation. By interventionism we bring performances outside the theatre space and place them in a public setting for the creation of community. Collaboration and improvisation will support the role of the performer, dropping the role of audience member.
The blueprint of the event encourages spontaneous performance areas and will include:
• An open forum for artists whose performances call for a more spontaneous, site specific environment
• A main stage
• Band creation area – with musical instruments and encouraged experimental band performances
• Workshop area
• Task oriented improvisational scores to participate in and perform for one another
• Trade area for artisans (non-monetary)
• Artists who have still-art are welcomed to install their work within the space
Those who contact ahead of time will have the choice to be scheduled into the main stage area and are also encouraged to take their performances outside the main stage for a shift of interaction. Even though this opportunity is offered, our hope is that it will not subtract from the spontaneity of the event or create separation between audience and performer.
We encourage those who perform to teach a workshop during the day to share ideas and art disciplines. The content of the workshop can be connected to your specific performance but is not required to be. There will be a workshop board to write down the time and content of the workshop. Do not be discouraged to perform if you would prefer not to teach a workshop, the workshop is not required but appreciated.
This event is free. Please do not expect to pay for performances, workshops, and entry; or to be paid. This space is for all to share performance and empower one another through teaching and critiquing.
Due to the size of the space and structure of the event we are asking for there to be no amplified music. Sorry if this comes as an inconvenience for some.
If your performance contains fire or open flame please contact us for further notice.

This is a collaborative effort and we want to hear your ideas as well. As much as this email might make the organization sound centralized this is a non-centralized event and we invite all too participate in the functions of making this situation manifest. Any Ohio Stiltwalkers?

I'm in Cincinnati, teaching myself on a pair of hand-held stilts, but have been wanting to branch out and practice on both drywall and pegs. I'm at the point where I need to be strapped in and am planning to make a pair of my own. I also need to learn how to fall and some other basics that I may have overlooked teaching myself.

Anyone out there who would like to impart some knowledge or just get together and play? I also have been hearing from a number of people in my community that they would like to learn to stilt.

We hold regular workshop weekends out in Middletown; various members of the community coming together to share skills. Last weekend I did a workshop on medicinal herbalism. If anyone would step up (ha, stilt joke) and lead a stilt workshop, I know there would be good group of people who would be down to get high. tribes.tribe.net/synctuarie is where the workshops are held.

The Carnival Takes Over The San Francisco Streets!

Ahhh yes, my beautiful family – it is happening!
An idea bred in our dear Douglas’s noggin’ for the opportunity to take some pretty pictures of beautiful people in interesting settings (or vice versa vice, vice vice versa, any way you want it) this Saturday, December 22nd we gather and call the streets ours!

This is a time of celebration, so let’s make this Solstice, the darkest day of the year, shine with colors that only those of the Circus wear – let’s friggin’ BLIND the confused passerby with our beauty, shed our own light, dark, odds and delicious ends, and create an exquisite mayhem!

This is purely Doug’s idea, but I think I’ll throw a bit more delicious magick into it, as this opportunity is far too good to pass up, and for some reason, the guy has given me free reign for the gathering of people… and I’ve decided that it’s time to shake some dust!

We’re making this an event.

This will be purely a playtime, joined by members of our dear friends and family (and Top Royalty of the San Francisco Circus Scene) VAU de VIRE SOCIETY & GOOFERMAN, so get your sweet, twisted asses in gear and come play with us. We’ll be doing what we do and looking our best, roaming the streets and finding various San Francisco scenes to play on and around, titillating the innocent passerby, and letting *them* shoose what kind of dreams they want to go home with. We won’t be cooped up in a club or ruled by the laws they need to abide by, not constricted by the limitations in the corporate world – this is OUR FUCKING DAY!

Let’s face it – the goddamn bunnies (gods, I loathe bunnies) have theirs, the Santa’s have theirs, the pirates, zombies, Pee Wee’s – the list goes on. Well, my dear, dear beautiful Circus Family, THIS will be ours. You know as much as I do how needed it is, and it’s far past due. (If it were a library book, we’d be fucked.)

The route for this Saturday is still being figured out by Doug, but the meeting place for this first year will be the Xenodrome, on 26th and Portrero in San Francisco.

The actual day it happens in the future will very likely change to a warmer one later, but this is the first, annual or whenever we feel like it, and like the Carnival, it could show up anywhere, anytime.

Please come this Saturday - to the very first of many - CARNIVALIA!

We will be thrilled to see you!

*** Doors, preparation and PHOTOS at Xenodrome - 9:00am, with Douglass & possibly Nightshade shooting pictures in our beautiful sets.

***Leaving Xenodrome at 11:30am, as sharp as we can get it!

The route is at this point a secret (even to us) and at times even might be decided by consulting the Oracles, so get your asses there by the time we leave, okay?

*Dress in your circus best, but dress warm – the weather is supposed to be a bit chilly, but no rain.

Critical Stilts Parade Burning Man 2007!!

Hellew my fellow addicts,
Our need to get HIGH on the Playa is drawing mighty near.
I wanted to begin discussions on the start time of Critical Stilts on thursday (which i am assuming is still the day we want to walk) and to see if anyone submitted the listing in the Who What Where and When catalogue?
In the past few years we have started at 2pm....this always feels WAY TOO EARLY to me...it is so bloody hot and i am still trying to start the day after the night before, when it is time to start getting stilted up for 2pm....
DOes anyone else feel this way too?
I would ideally like to start the parade at the cocktail hour (4:30 or 5pm) and i would like to propose the RED NOSE DISTRICTS already existing High Balls @ The High Chair Stilt Bar @ Happy Hour (as listed in the who what where when) as our starting point. The Stilt toilet will be up and running all week for your comfort.
I Iove the latter part of the day for cruising on into sunset and into twilight....it is MAGICAL.
I am so hoping you will agree.
FYI the theme on Thursday at the High Chair is Klown Kognito....stilters need not worry about dressing accordingly...but we made a theme so cuz we will also be serving drinks to shorties if they are klowned up.
We will be serving Klown Snot Cocktails....till they are gone.
Also, I would love to start talking about the parade route....and the various bars or pit stops we want to hit.
ANd maybe even send an EPlaya post about any art cars that want to participate that might drive some of us around ?

i am very intrigued by stilt walking but feel trapped in a tool-less existance! is there anyone out there who can share their space and tools to help me build me very first pair of stilts. i am looking to build a simple pair of wooden stilts with a pair of my shoes bolted on. my appreciate may come in the form of chocolate chip cookies or maybe some beers. obviously, i will pay for the essentials, i just need some help!!! i live in sf and am available during the days and on weekends.

It's that time again

Critical Stilts is meeting on the Playa!

Time
Thursday 4:20pm at the Red Nose District

This year is going to be the best. We have lots in line for you stilters and
groundlings as well!

We will have a parade, stilt games, drinks and will try to beat our record of 52
stilters in one spot.

There will also be DJ's at the Red Nose spinning our favorite stilter tunes
like "Higher Baby","The Skies the Limit" and my personal favorite "Please help me I falling"!

When the parade starts we will be hitting up as many stilt bars as we can and hijacking arts cars with
our good looks and witty remarks! If you have any questions or would like to add your BAR/STILT BAR/ART CAR to the parade
list please email me at houseofadam@speakeasy.net and we will try to add you to our outrageous event!

Remember this is not just for stilters... it's for everyone. This Thursday at the Red Nose District... Pay for the whole seat and only use the edge!

Extra stilts!

I put together a batch of stilts recently and ended up with some extras...
These are 30"-36" wooden, aluminum reinforced, peg stilts. There are about three dozen folks running around on these right now around the Northwest. They have a proven track record and are strong, safe and cheaper than average. ($150.00)
I would love to set some folks up on these in time for burningman.
There will be pictures of the stilts on my tribe page by this afternoon and you can contact me there for any more details.

i would LoVe for it to be on thursday again...but that's just me and my inability to arrive any earlier because of work :-(

plane travel with stilts?

We have to fly from Sac to Portland with our stilts. We have a bag for them but there's the worry that they will get all botched up in route.

any words of wisdom will be appreciated!

Hey All,

I am sending this out to all of you crazy people who have frequented Abundant Sugar. As you may know we have had a change of the guard here and we are in need of finding new roommates. As of the first of the month it will be just Aaron G and I. Aaron is also in love and (with blessings) is spending more and more time with his honey in Central America. All indicators say that I will be directing a film in the coming months and will not be in a position to run everything as we are accustomed.

Considering my options on maintaining Abundant Sugar, I can post again on tribe, fall back to looking for strangers on Craigslist or rethink things completely, maybe sublet to some other group or bail. I hate to let it go so...

If any of you have any leads on people looking to move or have ever dreamed of living outside the lines, or have any creative thoughts, please let me know. Total rent is 4k a month plus utilities and cleaners.
As you know the place is magical. I have included my last posting to tribe below. Please feel free to send it along to your various families and friends, classes, groups. playmates.

Chemistry is Everything!!

Abundant Sugar is losing it's XX chromosomes and we are radically out of balance. We need balance!
KJ and Caylee are moving on to greener pastures, leaving spots open to live at Abundant Sugar.

As many of you know, Abundant Sugar is an incredible artist loft space dedicated to gracefully fostering and nurturing creative and social energies to create a unique space that is safe, grounding and empowering for those that pass through the space.

Communal in nature, it is a household first for those that live there. It needs to provide a safe and stable place for the inhabitants to be able to project the presence that we do. To that end, we function as a family. Communication carries the day, trust is paramount and chemistry is everything. We share a lot, help each other and encourage each other to burn as brightly as we were meant to. We are stronger as individuals because of our commitment to each other.

In many ways, Abundant Sugar was modeled and refined after a Burningman theme camp model, and it works. We open our doors to a larger communal family that embraces what we aspire to do and generates a powerful social structure and creative cross pollination designed to make dreams come true. These people gather, share ideas and join forces to create incredible magic. They also help maintain and manage the place.

To live at Abundant Sugar calls for participation in the dream. Not a passive place, it calls for one to choose life, and it delivers in return. It is the perfect place for someone who wants to propel themselves forward creatively. Through the interaction of the community we support, the individual's potential is exponential. New connections are made, opportunities offered, extraordinary life experiences are manifested. All the resources of Abundant Sugar are available too those that live there. We have a fully equipped tool shop, a sprung dance floor with 22' ceilings and rehearsal mirrors, a video projection theater, pa sound system, large kitchen, tons of parking, tons of storage, private office space, internet, a dozen sofas, acres of fun fur, -oh...and an awesome tree in the living room.

While the rent is not a lot by LA standards, and certainly not for what is available at Abundant Sugar, it is imperative that those who live here are able to support themselves, pay rent and not be an additional drain on the place. The housemates pay the rent and utilities. Money brought into the space by anyone else using or renting the place goes into maintaining and improving the facility, paying a weekly house cleaner, buying toilet paper and compact flourescent light bulbs, etc. Rent is rent, just like anywhere else. No big deal.

If this sounds like you, if you think you would like to live outside the box then we encourage you to get in communication with us. We are open to any conversation, including a couple (there is the possibility of joining rooms into a suite).

I have seen your group, I think, at the New's Years parade downtown? I would love it if you are interested in being part of this celebration we are putting together. It's the Cycle-Logical Pedal Art Parade and Celebration. It's about dressing up your bike and yourself and parading through downtown Santa Cruz on your unicycle, bicycle, or tricycle. We'll head up to the Jamba Juice end of the mall that will be closed of to traffic. There Sadza, the marimba band, will be playing and lots of bike games, like the bicycle wheel of fortune, a bicycle juicer, clowns and lots of fun.

SF 3/25/07 Stilt wedding photo op at YBC

Hey folks!

Tserefina and I are bringing our wedding party to Yerba Buena Gardens tomorrow,
Sunday 3/25/07, for a wedding photo shoot with the Chronicle!
Our entire wedding party will be 10' tall, and we'd love to have you with us!

We're doing the classic formal, but invite other stilters to join us in dressy formal costumes.
We'll begin our procession at 3 PM from 5th and Folsom
(around the corner from Annie's Social Club)
and parade to the carousel before ending in the main gardens.

YBC management has cleared us to play those areas without hassle,
a rare opportunity for those who have tried in the past only to be asked to join the short masses.

“The Barnyard Dance” is the theme for the 132nd Annual Dixon May Fair Parade set for Saturday, May 12, 2007.
The May Fair Parade is the oldest parade in the state of California. Each year approximately 25,000 spectators line the streets of Downtown Dixon to view marching bands, floats, antique automobiles, equestrian units, drill teams, antique farm equipment as well as a host of other entries.

As you will see, the Dixon May Fair Parade is packed full of hometown fun!

newbie looking to make/buy pegs in L.A. :: pls help!

After prancing around BM last week on 2.5' pegs for the first time, I'm now looking to make or buy a pair.

Any tips on putting together a pair -- or places to go in L.A. to buy materials?
Or is it better to buy some online?
What do you all figure a pair of 2.5' pegs would cost?

If anyone knows a good resource for these kinds of questions, any help would be much appreciated.

840 miles on stilts

I have had an approach from a guy here in the UK who is going to attempt a walk from the northern tip of Scotland to Land's End in Southern England - 840 miles in all.
He says:-I'm trying to raise money for the British Epilepsy Association I will be using a variety of stilts as I'll be doing a lot of the walk in costume. Most of the leg work will be done on pegs but when I'm fundraising I'll switch to drywall or poweriser so I can wear my costumes. Have a look at www.dangerous-stiltwalkers.co.uk for a peek a the kind of thing I do. If you have flash player 8 installed I've just finished encoding a great promo vid, its the page called flash8video.So far I've got the backing of the epilepsy asociation, the local circus, Salomon sports and the Trail plus one of the biggest running organisations. I'm doing a half marathon next month and the great northern run the month after, both on stilts.

Can anyone help him with sponsorship attempts or advise him of who to contact. Any help will be welcome.

FAILURE TO STILT!!

So I am havening a hard time building stilts that will not crack. The wood I am using is poplar so it should be strong enough but I am not sure. I am going to try and use bolts to reinforce to the highest stress points but if any one has any good ideas I would every much be glad for the help.

So about 5 day ago Atom got me hooked on stilting and now I need it, my blood calls for it. I want to make my own but I am having a hard time finding instructions on how to build your own stilts. If any one here has any:
1)Must do's
2)Must not do's
3)A good source for stilt making

Please, please, I need my fixxx... if not I might start to... do Something!! I don't know what but it will not be good.

Hey tall ones!

It's your new friend here- I met a bunch of ya at BM last year at Critical Stilts and the Bars...

I am putting together a stilting bar for Burning Man this year... it's going to be a super-plush place for us all to hang out IN THE SHADE!

I just wondered if there are any of you who have done this before who might have a few pointers for a new bar-builder. (We are using scaffolding as our bar and places to sit with various heights.)

I'd love to hear your ideas and time-tested ways of being crazy up high!

steel vs wood stilts???

HI folks,
I'm going traveling to Turkey/Egypt/Europe on the Nectar temple tour and I want to get new stilts made for traveling. Does anyone have any info advice on what kind of stilts would be best. I've been on wooden peg stilts for years now (made my Tom Sepe) and was thinkin to try out steel ones for the lighter traveling. What's the argument against steel stilts? Does anyone know a good design? I have a blacksmith in SF who can make them for me. Any good tips or advice?

Want to be in a short film on stilts?

Hi All,

I just heard about this tribe from a clown I met the other night, so hello to all.

I'm producing a short film about the dark and mysterious underbelly of competitive eating, and much of the film is set around the carnival and sideshow world. We are shooting the final scene of the film, 'The World Pie Eating Championships', at the Castro Theatre on March 6th and 7th from 10-4 pm. And I thought it would be really cool to have some people on stilts perform and set the tone of the scene as carnival related.

We wouldn't be able to pay anyone unforunately, but we do have a great photographer working on the film so you'd get some cool photos, we'd feed you and treat you well, and it should be a fun two days.

If anyone is interested please send me an email at nathan@numbersandspaces.com and I can tell you more about the project, and I'm new to this world, so any advice at all would be appreciated.
